How to remove the background from a photo or video

  1. Upload a file

Upload a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photo, or an MP4 or MOV video.

  2. Click what to keep

Studio opens with Magic Blur ready. Click the person or object you want to keep. The original stays visible while you select.

  3. Export

Photos export as transparent PNGs. Videos export as MP4s on a green background, which you remove with your editor's chroma key.

Remove the background and save a transparent PNG

Drop the saved PNG onto a white product page, a colored banner or a dark slide deck as it is. The checkerboard in the preview only marks transparent areas and is not part of the file.

Remove a video background with chromakey

Upload a video and Studio opens with a green (#00FF00) background. Choose the person to keep, follow them with Magic Blur, then export the green-background video. Key out the green with your video editor's chroma key and place any background behind them.

See the green background disappear with chromakey

The left side is the green-background export from Studio; the right side is the result after chroma key. MP4 files have no transparency, so the green is removed in your editor. If green remains on the edges, adjust the chroma key edge and spill settings. If the subject contains green, choose a different solid background color.

Frequently asked questions

Is the background removed as soon as I upload?

Uploading opens Studio with the subject effect set to Original. Photos start with a transparent background; videos start with green. Select the subject and, for video, track its movement before exporting.

Why save as PNG instead of JPG?

PNG supports transparency. JPG does not, so use PNG for a cutout you want to place on another background.

Can I remove a video background?

Yes, using a green-background export followed by chromakey. Studio exports the selected subject over a solid color. Remove that color in a video editor; this flow does not export an alpha-channel video directly.

Which file formats can I upload?

Upload JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photos, or videos such as MP4 and MOV. Video support also depends on the codec inside the file.

Can I refine the selection around hair and fine edges?

Select the person or object you want to keep. Review the outline and adjust your selection before exporting; hair, glass and fine details may need extra care.

How is background removal different from background blur?

Blur keeps the background visible and softens its details. Removal uses transparent PNGs for photos; for video, export a solid background and remove it with chromakey in another editor.
