How to convert JPG to PNG

What changes when a JPG becomes a PNG

JPG uses lossy compression and discards fine detail when a photo is saved, to keep the file small. PNG is lossless, so the converter stores the JPG's decoded pixels exactly, compression artifacts included. The picture does not get better, but it stops losing quality. Use the PNG as an editing copy, or for forms that only accept PNG.

Lossless compression handles flat color and sharp edges well but has little to work with in the grain of a photo, so the file usually grows. Compare the actual file sizes in the example below. The dimensions stay the same. The browser writes the PNG without extra optimization, so Compress PNG often makes it smaller without changing a pixel.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting JPG to PNG restore detail or remove the background?

No. Detail lost in the JPG does not come back, and the background does not become transparent. The file can get larger.

Can I just rename a .jpg file to .png?

Renaming changes only the label. The data inside is still JPEG, so apps and upload forms that check the real format may reject the file or fail to open it. Converting rewrites the image as actual PNG data.

Will a sideways phone photo come out the right way up?

Yes. The orientation tag your camera saved is applied when the photo is decoded, so the PNG pixels are stored upright. Camera details and GPS location from the JPG are not copied into the PNG.

How can I make the PNG smaller without losing quality?

Run it through Compress PNG, which rewrites the file losslessly and keeps every pixel. If you need a much smaller file and lossy compression is acceptable, keep the JPG or use Convert JPG to WebP instead.

Are my files uploaded to a server?
