How to compress a PNG

  1. Choose your PNG images.

  2. Compress them. Pixels are not changed, so there is nothing to set.

  3. Check the new sizes and download.

What lossless PNG optimization changes

The same PNG image can be stored in many valid ways. The optimizer, oxipng, tries several row filters and compression settings. Where possible, it also uses a smaller color type or bit depth, such as dropping an alpha channel from an image that is fully opaque. The decoded result stays identical, with the same pixels, dimensions and transparency.

Savings depend on how the file was written. PNGs saved with light compression, including the ones our converters create, often shrink a lot. A file that was already optimized has little left to gain. Photos and gradients stay large because lossless compression cannot discard detail. If a lossy file is acceptable, Convert PNG to WebP goes much further.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set a target file size for PNG compression?

No. It is lossless, so there is no quality or target-size setting. An already optimized PNG may stay the same size.

Does this tool reduce the number of colors?

No. Some PNG compressors shrink files by merging similar colors, which changes the image. This tool keeps every pixel value, so the savings can be smaller, but the picture does not change.

Is metadata removed from the PNG?

No. The optimizer rewrites the compressed image data but leaves metadata such as text comments and EXIF in the file. If the image must not carry personal details, check it with a metadata viewer before sharing.

How much smaller will my PNG get?

It depends on how the file was saved. The example below uses a PNG saved with standard compression and shows its actual before and after sizes. The savings are specific to this file. A file that is already optimized may come back unchanged.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Files are processed in your browser on this device and are not sent to BlurMe servers.
