How to convert PNG to WebP

Lossy WebP for images with transparency

PNG is lossless, so graphics stay exact but photos, gradients and large illustrations get heavy. This tool writes lossy WebP. It compresses the color information much harder and keeps the alpha channel separate. A cut-out product photo or an illustration on a transparent background can become much smaller and still sit cleanly on any page color.

Lossy WebP stores color at a lower resolution than brightness. That is hard to see in photos, but it can soften thin colored lines and small red or blue text. Compare screenshots, interface captures and pixel art with the PNG at their original size. When every pixel must stay exact, Compress PNG is the lossless option.

Frequently asked questions

Does PNG to WebP keep transparency without quality loss?

Transparency is kept, but colors are compressed with some loss. Thin lines and small text can soften slightly.

Can I turn a PNG with a white background into a transparent WebP?

No. The tool keeps transparency that already exists in the PNG, but it does not remove a solid background. Areas that are white in the PNG stay white in the WebP.

Can this tool create lossless WebP?

No. It always writes lossy WebP, and even Quality 100 is not pixel-exact. To reduce a PNG without changing any pixels, use Compress PNG.

Does the quality setting affect transparent areas?

No. The alpha channel is compressed separately and does not follow the Quality value, so transparent and semi-transparent areas keep their shape. Lower quality mainly softens colors and fine detail.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Files are processed in your browser on this device and are not sent to BlurMe servers.
