PNG as a working copy of a WebP image

Some editors, office programs and older apps cannot open WebP, or they open it but cannot save it back. PNG is supported almost everywhere and keeps the alpha channel, so it works as an intermediate file when you need to edit an image you found online or received as WebP.

Storing a lossy image losslessly takes more room. The browser writes the PNG without extra optimization, so once you finish editing, Compress PNG can shrink it without changing a pixel.

Will PNG recover detail missing from WebP?

No. Detail lost to WebP compression does not come back, and the file can get larger.

Is PNG a good format for editing a WebP image?

Yes. PNG is lossless, so saving it again during editing adds no new compression loss. Transparent areas stay transparent. Convert to a lossy format only once, when the image is finished.

Why does my editor show a checkerboard behind the PNG?

The checkerboard is how editors display transparency. The WebP had transparent pixels and the PNG keeps them. To place the image on a solid color instead, use Convert WebP to JPG and choose a Background color.

How do I turn the edited PNG back into WebP?

Use Convert PNG to WebP when you are done. It writes lossy WebP at the Quality you choose and keeps transparency, so check thin lines and small text in the result.
