How to convert JPG to WebP

Why WebP often makes photos lighter

WebP and JPG are both lossy formats. WebP predicts each block of the image from its neighbors before compressing it, so it often needs fewer bytes for a similar look. On websites, where image weight affects how quickly pages load, that difference adds up.

Conversion starts from the JPG, not from your camera's original data. Detail the JPG already lost stays lost, and a low Quality value removes more on top of it. Keep the original JPGs too, because converting the WebP back to JPG later would add yet another round of loss.

Frequently asked questions

Will WebP always be smaller than my JPG?

Not always. It is usually smaller, but a heavily compressed JPG can end up the same size or larger.

Does converting a JPG to WebP add another round of compression loss?

Yes, a small one. The JPG is decoded to pixels and compressed again as lossy WebP. Convert from the original file, not from a copy that has already been saved several times.

Can every app open WebP files?

Current versions of major browsers display WebP, but some older desktop software, email clients and upload forms still reject it. Use the JPG wherever the WebP might not be accepted.

What quality setting should I use for website photos?

Start with the default of 80 and look at faces, skin and smooth skies at full size. If the file is still too heavy, lower the value in small steps and stop when texture starts to look smeared.

Are my files uploaded to a server?
