How to convert HEIC to PNG

When PNG makes sense for a HEIC photo

Converting HEIC to PNG decodes the photo once and stores the pixels without another round of lossy compression. Use the PNG for retouching, compositing or design work where the file will be saved again and again. It also opens in editors that cannot read HEIC.

Frequently asked questions

Why can a PNG be larger than the original HEIC?

HEIC uses lossy compression to stay small, while PNG stores every pixel without loss. The image does not get any sharper.

Is the PNG an exact copy of my HEIC photo?

Not in every respect. The pixels are saved with 8 bits per color channel, so HDR highlights and higher bit depth are not kept. EXIF details such as GPS location are not copied either. No new compression loss is added.

Why did a large batch stop with a limit error?

All converted files together must stay under 150 MB. Full-resolution photos saved as PNG often take many megabytes each, so split large sets into smaller batches.

Why is there no preview before I convert?

The page previews JPG, PNG and WebP inputs only, so HEIC files are not shown before processing. After you select Process files, the first converted PNG appears above the download list.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Files are processed in your browser on this device and are not sent to BlurMe servers.
