How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Choose a PDF.

  2. Enter the pages to number, or leave it empty for all pages.

  3. Download the PDF with numbers centered at the bottom.

How the numbers are placed on each page

Numbers are set in Helvetica at up to 12 points and centered about 18 points above the bottom edge. Placement follows the visible area of each page, so landscape pages, pages with a saved rotation and pages of different sizes in one file all get an upright number at the bottom center.

The number shows the page's position in the file when you add it and does not update later, so finish merging, removing and reordering first. The tool writes into the original document instead of copying pages, so its bookmarks are kept. Any change to a digitally signed PDF stops the signature from validating, so number the pages before signing.

Frequently asked questions

Does numbering start from the first selected page?
No. Each page shows its real page number, so a selection that starts at page 3 starts at 3.
Can I change the font, size or position of the numbers?
No. The numbers always appear in black at the bottom center, and formats such as Page 3 of 10 or Roman numerals are not available.
Will the numbers cover text already at the bottom of the page?
They are drawn on top of the page without a background, so a footer at the bottom center will overlap with the number. Leave those pages out of the selection or check them in the result.
Are the added numbers real text?
Yes. They are written as PDF text, so most viewers let you select and search them. Watermark PDF works differently and adds its text as an image.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Files are processed in your browser on this device and are not sent to BlurMe servers.
